Athenar bermani
(for Athenar and Berman)Etymology
Athenar honours the Cleveland metal artist and notable Pittsburgh Steelers fan Athenar, whose music accompanied most of the specimen's preparation.
The
species epithet,
bermani, honours David Berman for his foundational work on diplodocoid skulls at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and his original description of the holotype with John McIntosh in 1978.

Discovery
The remains of
Athenar were discovered in the Morrison Formation at the Carnegie Quarry, Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, USA, by Earl Douglass in 1913.
The
holotype (CM 26552) is a braincase and partial skull roof.
