Discovery
The only remains of
Chienkosaurus were discovered at "Locality 47" in the Shangshaximiao Formation, (Guangyuan/Kuangyuan Group), in the hill slopes under the Chentsianyen Escarpment, Jiang County, Guangyuan prefecture-level City, Sichuan Province, China, by Meinian Bien, Hengtai Mi and C.C. Young, during the late spring of 1941.
The
holotype (IVPP V237) is a single tooth. There were initially four teeth, but Dong assigned three of them to the crocodile
Hsisosuchus in 1983.
