Jaklapallisaurus asymmetrica
(Asymmetrical Jaklapalli lizard)Etymology
Jaklapallisaurus is derived from "Jaklapalli" (the Indian village close to where it was discovered) and the Greek "sauros" (lizard). The species epithet, asymmetrica (asymmetrical, lacking symmetry, not identical on both sides of a central line), refers to its wonky ankle.
Discovery
The remains of Jaklapallisaurus were discovered in the Upper Maleri Formation (Pranhita–Godavari Basin), 3km from Jaklapalli village, Andhra Pradesh, India, by Tharavat S. Kutty. The holotype (ISI R274) is a fragmentary back vertebra, a tail vertebra, a partial right thigh, a complete right shin, an ankle, two metatarsals (foot bones) and two toe bones. The bottom end of a thigh (ISI R279) from the Lower Dharmaram Formation, around 1 km northeast of Rampur village, was also referred to Jaklapallisaurus.
